Here are 5 ways to deal with sunburned lips

adminBy adminFebruary 6, 2026

You probably know that you need to protect your skin and body when you are outside. But, what about your lips?

Exercising too much can lead to itchy, puffy lips. This can make it difficult to eat and drink. You can treat lip sunburns at-home with aloe vera or painkillers, but more serious cases may require a visit to a doctor.

These are five ways to treat burnt lips, and how to prevent them from happening again.

Sunburnt lips symptoms: Your lip color may look different depending on whether it is a first-degree or second-degree burn.

First-degree sunburned lips are more mild and show signs such as:

Sensitivity to stinging and irritation when eating or speaking, Dryness, and a little peeling.

How to heal sunburnt lips?

A minor lip sunburn can be treated at home. These home remedies can reduce sensitivity, dryness, burning, and pain associated with sunburned lips.

1. Cool compresses: It is important to apply cool compresses immediately after sunburns.

2. Use anti-inflammatory drugs. Debra Jaliman MD, a board certified dermatologist, suggests that non-steroidal antiinflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can be used to reduce swelling and pain in the lips.

3. Use aloe Vera: Aloe versa is a popular sunburn treatment due to its cooling properties that can soothe sensitive skin.

4. To keep your lips moisturized, use a moisturizer.

5. Hydrocortisone topical: Hydrocortisone is an over-the counter steroid cream that acts as an anti-inflammatory.
